Nazrul was 22 when he wrote the poem that made him immortal. The rebel poems, in order of fire:
1. Bidrohi (The Rebel): written December 1921, published 6 January 1922 in Bijli, 139 lines of pure defiance. Collected in Agnibeena, October 1922. It earned him the name Bidrohi Kobi, the Rebel Poet. 2. Manush: "Gahi samyer gaan" (I sing the song of equality). His humanist manifesto, recited at every major observance. 3. Karar Oi Louho Kopat: the iron prison bars cannot hold the song. Written from his own jail experience after his 1923 arrest. 4. Kandari Hushiar: helmsman, beware. A warning to leaders, still quoted in protests across Bengal. 5. Daridro: poverty as wound and weapon. Raw, rhythmic, furious.
