Topic pages are how Bengali poems get browsed now, one theme at a time, and banglashikha's topic shelves are the model this site's winners set. Our catalogue tags every poem by theme, which lets a theme be counted instead of just listed. Monsoon, barsha, comes sixth: 323 poems. The count underneath is the surprise. Of those 323 rain poems, 284 are Tagore's.

No other big theme concentrates like this. Love spreads across 19 poets; sorrow and devotion have their own schools. Monsoon is 88 percent one man, because Tagore wrote the rains of Bengal so completely, season after season, that later poets mostly wrote around him. The remaining 39 poems are not footnotes, though. Sukanta's rain is hunger and city streets, Jibanananda's five are grey-green and quiet, and Jasimuddin's two are village weather, ponds and paths turning to mud.

The tags underneath deepen the picture. Of the 323 monsoon poems, 166 are also tagged nature, 139 also love, 124 also devotion and 61 also river, because in this poetry the rain is never only weather: it is the season lovers separate in, the river rising, the fields filling. Eleven poets in total contribute to the shelf, which means three poets beyond the table hold four poems between them. Even the tail of the tail is counted here, because on a shelf this lopsided, four poems is a findable thing.

Reading the rain in order

Read the 39 first, on the first heavy rain of the year, and Tagore after, when the season has settled in. That order keeps the shelf honest: the monsoon in Bengali poetry is bigger than its biggest poet, but only just, and our records can show the exact size of the exception. The theme counts across the whole catalogue sit in the chart above; the love shelf has its own count on this blog, and it spreads far wider than this one.
